I like to think I smile all the time and to be honest one of my qualities is how much I smile *unless you dislike me smiling* Anyway, I know this seems like a weird thing to blog about but I was thinking about why I smile and why others smile. The Oxford Dictionary Definition for 'Smile' is: form one’s features into a pleased, kind, or amused expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up and the front teeth exposed.
People generally relate smiling with happiness if not other positive feelings such as admiration, love, pride ect ect, yet, I (along with others, I presume) smile when I'm not happy also. I thought about why I do this for a long time and I came to the conclusion that it's because I want to put on a brave face and want to show people that they don't have to pity me.
However, my friends are able to tell when I'm upset, even if I'm smiling. Because when people smile, they don't only grin madly but their eyes sparkle to show as if they are happy, but if your troubled not even the greatest actress or actor on the planet would be able to build up that little sparkle in their eye to suggest they are ok.
To be honest, smiling when your sad is one of the worst things to do. Because if you don't have attentive friends or family you'll carry on feeling negative because no one can help you and support you purely because no one knows that you don't feel happy. Showing that your upset is much more than a strength than a weakness in today's society because people can help you and people will admire your bravery for being open about your emotions.
Although a smile can light up a room, a smile can also darken your chance of support...
